France-based artificial intelligence (AI)-focused company DentalMonitoring is launching an Artificial Intelligence-guided scan for orthodontics, named ScanAssist.

The device uses AI-guided instructions and real-time feedback to help patients complete their scans, while aiming to provide a fun and engaging patient experience. The in-app system provides a 3D model of a mouth that follows patients as they scan to provide high-quality pictures and detailed analysis of treatment progression and oral health.

ScanAssist is a new addition to the DentalMonitoring app, which uses software and AI to detect more than 130 intraoral observations for braces and aligners treatments. This follows the release of DentalMonitoring’s ScanBox in 2021.

The system aims to provide a game-inspired experience, with visual and audio cues designed to increase motivation and compliance.

“Innovation is the motor that drives us to create solutions like ScanAssist, which uses one-of-a-kind AI-powered technology to guide patients at every step,” says DentalMonitoring CEO Philippe Salah. “We’re thrilled doctors and patients can use our solutions to create the best treatment experience possible.”

AI is becoming a key driver of medical device innovation. According to a report by GlobalData, AI is growing in several fields globally, with the market expected to reach $93 billion in 2023, up 12% from 2022.

The US Food and Drug Administration accelerated approvals of medical devices with AI in 2022, and this is expected to continue through 2023. As more AI-based tools and devices are approved, providers are set to increase their use of AI in everyday practice.
